Happy birthday
Thirty‑one
The last two birthdays, I have been a few thousand kilometres away from you.
In a few months that ends, and the distance becomes a thing we used to do.
But today is not about the wedding, or the move, or any of what comes next. Today is only about you.
So this year, your gift isn’t a thing you unwrap.
It’s a memory — one we go and make together, and then keep for the rest of our lives.
So — there is a house in the mountains of Izu.
落合楼
Yugashima · Izu · est. 1874
猫越川Nekko‑gawa 女橋 the woman’s bridge
本谷川Hondani‑gawa 男橋 the man’s bridge
狩野川Kano‑gawa 出会い橋 the meeting bridge
The house stands on the spit of land where two rivers come down out of the Amagi mountains and become one river.
One of them is crossed by a bridge called Otoko‑bashi, the man’s bridge. The other by Onna‑bashi, the woman’s. Where the two rivers meet there is a third bridge, and it has been called Deai‑bashi — the meeting — for longer than anyone has bothered to record.
In 1881 the inn was renamed for the ground it sits on. Ochiau — to meet.
Nothing here is in a hurry. Not the house, not the river — and for one night, not us.

Your room
松風
“wind in the pines”
A hot spring bath inside the room, running all night. Every window faces the garden. Nothing else is in view.

A car comes for you. Dinner is the winter menu, course after course. Nothing to pay for while you are there.

Friday into Saturday
It isn't an idea. It's booked.

Confirmed
And then we have it. On your fortieth, on your fiftieth, on your seventieth — and for as long as life goes on.
Happy birthday, Naina.
